The Tide Inside the Mountain

Stillness does not mean emptiness.

Chapter IX — The Tide Inside the Mountain

The Meaning

Composure can contain immense movement. What appears unmoved from outside may be navigating weather no observer can see.

The Story

Surveyor Ansel struck the mountain with his hammer and heard a wave answer. The slope around him was dry. Dust coated the pines. No river ran within forty miles. He struck again. From behind twelve feet of granite came the long collapse of water against stone. The mining company had hired Ansel to prove the mountain empty. He placed his ear against its sun-warmed face. Far inside, something vast withdrew, gathered itself, and returned. The village below called the mountain Stillness. No avalanche marked it. No spring escaped its sides. Generations had built homes in its shadow precisely because nothing there appeared to move.
