The Cartographer's Scar

A wound may become information without becoming destination.

Chapter X — The Cartographer's Scar

The Meaning

History may change the route without gaining ownership of every destination that follows.

The Story

All of Lysa’s maps began curving toward the scar on her left hand. Rivers bent across paper to touch it. Roads abandoned surveyed ground and circled the pale ridge between her thumb and wrist. Even borders she drew with a ruler developed a small deviation in its direction. The scar came from the fire at Orrin Pass. So did her reputation. At nineteen, Lysa had guided twelve travelers through burning woods after the official road collapsed. She pressed her hand against a hot iron marker to turn it toward safety. The injury healed into a branching line. The route she found became known as Lysa’s Way.
