The Lighthouse With No Sea

Purpose can remain valid after its expected environment disappears.

Chapter XII — The Lighthouse With No Sea

The Meaning

A gift does not become useless when its expected setting disappears. Purpose may survive by changing what it guides.

The Story

The sea withdrew from Bellweather Lighthouse and did not return. For forty years, Keeper Senn continued polishing the lens. Grass covered the harbor. Pines grew through the ribs of ships. Maps began printing the lighthouse as an error three hundred miles inland. The Maritime Office sent a decommission notice. Senn nailed it to the door and lit the lamp at dusk. That night, for the first time, the beam did not turn toward the vanished water. It crossed the mountains and revealed a road no daylight had ever shown. The road appeared only inside the moving light: pale stones winding between ravines, passing under roots, and climbing toward the northern pass. When the beam moved on, the ground returned to brush and shadow.
