The Knot That Held

What saved us in one season need not become permanent to have been real, necessary, and worthy of gratitude.

The knot beneath Rellan Bridge contained rope from seven generations and no pattern recognized by sailors. It held two broken towers above a gorge. Hemp crossed wire. Wire crossed funeral cloth. A child’s red scarf disappeared beneath tarred cord and emerged thirty feet lower as part of a load-bearing loop. Engineers called it indefensible. The valley called it the reason they were alive. When Edda was ordered to replace it, she climbed down with a knife. The knot tightened beneath her hand. Far below, the river carried away the first snow. Edda’s grandmother had added copper wire after the western tower split. Her mother had stitched a leather sleeve around a burned section during the grain fire. At sixteen, Edda contributed the red scarf when no rope remained and thirty people were still crossing.
