The Staircase Beneath the Floor

The Story
Oren found the staircase beneath forty years of completed work. It began under his desk, below ledgers balanced for other people, schedules kept, debts repaid, and forms signed in triplicate. The first stone step was worn as though his foot had rested there many times. Oren remembered wanting to build instruments. He did not remember burying the entrance. Light rose from somewhere below. On his desk, tomorrow’s assignments waited in six neat piles. Oren lifted the floorboard anyway. The stair first descended. Its steps were built from abandoned plans: sketches of violins, measurements for bells, a half-designed flute. Dust had been recently disturbed, though no one else entered the office.
