The Story
When the village declared the furnace dead, Eren was beneath the snow feeding it one piece of coal at a time. Above him, officials sealed the chimney. They posted a notice in the square announcing that the old heatworks had failed and spring planting would be delayed indefinitely. Eren heard their boots through eight feet of frozen earth. The furnace flame had shrunk to the size of his hand. It was not dead. It had gone where winter could not reach it. The heatworks once warmed every greenhouse through buried pipes. After Eren’s sister died, he stopped attending council meetings and worked alone below. People mistook his silence for surrender. When steam stopped rising from the chimney, they assumed the same of the furnace.
