The Mender of Shadows

Wholeness is not achieved by removing every difficult part. It begins when abandonment stops inside the self.

Iria repaired everyone’s shadow except her own. People arrived carrying darkness torn by grief, thinned by fear, or cut to fit rooms too small for them. Iria stitched each piece with thread matched so carefully that the repair disappeared by sunset. Behind her shop, a locked cabinet held the parts she had removed from herself: anger, appetite, ambition, sorrow, and one strong hand she had been told looked threatening. One morning, Iria’s remaining shadow would not rise. It lay beneath her chair, too incomplete to follow. Without it, sunlight passed through Iria strangely. Customers distrusted her work. A shadowless mender, they whispered, could not understand weight.
