The Story
On the first morning of peace, Tovan discovered that his armor had locked itself. The city bells rang six times. People opened shutters that had been closed for nine years. In the square, soldiers removed helmets and let sunlight touch the pale bands across their foreheads. Tovan found the release beneath his left arm and pressed it. Nothing happened. He tried the collar latch, the spine pins, and the small internal lever only the wearer could reach. Each had worked in smoke, mud, and darkness. In the quiet room they would not move. When his daughter knocked, Tovan told her he was not dressed.
