Book I · Chapter XV
The Cage Made of Open Doors
Unlimited possibility can become paralysis.

The Meaning
Freedom is not the obligation to live every possible life. Sometimes it begins with choosing one unpromising first step.
The Story
Nila’s prison had no walls. It was made from open doors. One led to a stage where an audience waited. One opened onto a laboratory bearing her name. Through another, three children ran toward a version of her who knew how to receive them. Every door was unlocked. Each demanded that she enter before it closed forever. At the center, Nila sat beneath a map connecting every threshold and moved nowhere for eleven years. The doors had appeared on her eighteenth birthday. Her family called them gifts. Her teachers admired their number. Whenever Nila approached one, another opened with a future equally vivid.
